SPARTAN ADVANCED PROTECTION SYSTEM®

The Spartan Advanced Protection System (APS) is a set of features designed to keep firefighters safe. Vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of death among U.S. firefighters, and with each passing year Spartan has strived to make our vehicles better, stronger and safer.

The Spartan APS is a market-leading safety suite engineered to safeguard emergency responders in the most demanding conditions. This comprehensive system includes Frontal Impact Protection and Rollover Protection to help shield occupants during collisions and overturns, while Advanced Seat Belts and a Reinforced Cab Structure further enhance crew survivability. Electronic Stability Control provides improved handling and reduces the risk of skidding or loss of control. The system also enhances situational awareness and in-cab air quality with a 360-degree camera, Advanced Climate Control System, HEPA Filtration, and Active Air Purification—creating a safer, cleaner, and more controlled environment for firefighters on every call.

Explore more features of the Spartan Advanced Protection System below.

Intelligent Restraint Control

The innovative seat belt system uses sensors and a pretensioner mechanism to intelligently pull the occupant into the seat during an impact or rollover, dramatically reducing restraint system injuries.

Electronic Stability Control

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a major advancement in fire truck safety, using computerized technology to enhance vehicle stability and reduce the risk of crashes. ESC detects loss of steering control and automatically applies the brakes, adjusts the throttle, or assists with steering to help maintain control. This intelligent system significantly improves vehicle stability and minimizes the chances of skidding, ensuring safer operation in critical situations.

Heavy-Duty Aluminum Cab

At Spartan, we design our cabs with the most advanced safety provisions available today and validate them through rigorous third-party testing to ensure protection from every angle. We test for roof crush, frontal impact, roll stability, airbag performance, seat mounting integrity, and seat belt restraint system effectiveness.

Our construction methods and material selections are engineered for maximum strength, resulting in one of the most robust frames on the market—built to withstand the demands of firefighting. Key structural reinforcements include a reinforced roof structure with C-channel support, a fortified engine compartment, and reinforced front and rear step assemblies.

4Front® Airbag System by IMMI®

Spartan Fire Chassis partnered with IMMI to conduct custom crash testing, enabling the development of specialized airbags tailored specifically for fire truck applications. This collaboration led to the integration of advanced safety technologies such as the Integrated Buckle Pretensioner (IBP) and the Suspension Seat System (S4S), which work together to ensure proper firefighter positioning.

In the event of a frontal collision, a precisely calibrated pyrotechnic deployment system activates steering wheel and knee airbags designed for Spartan cabs. These airbags protect occupants from contact with the instrument panel and other interior surfaces, locking the lower body in place to allow the upper body to be safely cushioned by the steering wheel airbag.

RollTek® Airbag System

When an unrecoverable rollover is detected, Spartan’s advanced side roll airbag protection system—the first of its kind designed specifically for fire apparatus—deploys side airbags to protect all occupants. This supplemental rollover protection is calibrated through extensive rollover testing to ensure precise pyrotechnic deployment. Integrated with J1939 diagnostic tools, the system provides reliable performance and real-time diagnostics to enhance firefighter safety in the most extreme conditions.

Guarding Crews from Contaminants

Daily, firefighters are exposed to harmful toxins and contaminants that most people rarely come across. Fire, smoke, soot and debris are just the beginning. They’re also breathing in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It’s a life-threatening job, even after the fires are out.

Your job is to protect the health and well-being of your community, as well as your crew. Our job is to give you the tools and technology you need to help reduce the risks. Introducing our revolutionary Contaminant Containment and Management solutions and innovations.

Advanced Filtration System

Spartan’s Advanced Filtration System features a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which can trap or filter out 99.97% of toxic particles and contaminants that are airborne in the cab. The filter is placed at the top of the back of the cab wall so it does not impede cab space.

ACTIVE AIR PURIFICATION SYSTEM

The Active Air Purification system uses advanced Photohydroionization (PHI-CELL) and UV technology to actively eliminate viral and bacterial pathogens, odors, mold, and mildew by safely distributing low levels of naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) throughout the cab. This active sanitization process requires no operator or manual application, continuously improving air quality without harming interior surfaces. Housed in a durable stainless steel casing and featuring a compact design for flexible placement, the system ensures a cleaner, safer environment for your crew on every call.

• Kills 99% of germs, microbes, viruses and bacteria in the air and on surfaces.
• Proven reduction in sneeze germs by 99% within three feet.
• Proven efficiency on microbes (third-party tested on H1N1, Avian flu, sneeze test).
• Proven impact on odor reduction.

SCBA CONTAINMENT

Spartan’s Contaminant Containment and Management system includes an outside compartment to store the SCBA tanks and packs. It is easily accessed but still shielded from the cab interior.

Floors

Bedliner-coated treadplates with rolled edges and a smooth, easy-to-clean finish are designed for efficient debris removal. The seamless design eliminates stair nosing that can trap dirt, allowing for faster, more thorough cleaning and improved durability in high-traffic areas.

EASY-CLEAN INTERIOR

Spartan partnered with H.O. Bostrom to provide minimally seamed, zip-off seat covers with foam block encapsulated barrier that reduces gas and liquid absorption. The seat covers are removeable and replaceable for deeper cleaning to remove any toxins that transfer from firefighters or their gear.
